Do you know what the world's first webcam was for?
Security, perhaps?
Nope.
Monitoring traffic on the interstate?
Nope.
Internet porn?
Nope.
Keeping an eye on a bunch of adorable baby koalas?
STILL NOPE. KOALAS BE DAMNED.
The world's first webcam was used to keep an eye on a coffee pot:
In 1991, scientists at Cambridge University invented the world's first webcam to watch a coffee pot located in another part of the building. They didn't want to walk to the pot to find it empty, so they pointed a camera at it and streamed it over the web.
This is the actual image.
ChatRoulette be damned. Skype be damned. Koalas be damned. It all started with the world's favorite black drippy beverage.
